What Doesn’t Affect Your Website SEO
Before we talk about how to make your website SEO friendly, let’s begin with two things that don’t affect your website SEO.
- Your Website Url.
it doesn’t matter if you have a free url like Blogspot or siterubix. What matters is the value you offer. Many experienced bloggers talk about how much they regret the time spent trying to come up with a name and url for their site.
True buying your own domain name is important for building your brand but it has no effect your google search engine rank.
- The age of your post
From the above screenshot, we can see that the top result was published on the 8th of November, 2018. Less than a month before this publication.
How To Make Your Website SEO friendly.
Now let’s get into it.
1. Begin With The WordPress Backend Settings
The first step to make your website SEO friendly is putting in place the right settings, like;
- Downloading and installing important SEO plugins like Yoast, the all in one SEO Pack and EWWW Image Optimizer.
- Putting in place the right, home title, website description, and tags.
Below is a video guide on how to attain this with your WordPress website.
2. Create Awesome Content
Majority of the searches carried out online are for content on specific topics not for websites. Even websites like Twitter, Pinterest and Facebook have a lot of traffic because of the content available on these sites.
So needless to say in order to make your website SEO friendly, you have to create useful content.
How Can We Create Awesome Content?
Before we dive into talking about how to create awesome content, let’s first talk about some characteristics of awesome content;
- High traffic and low competition keywords.
- Content length of at least 1000 words longs. ( Most high ranking articles are usually 3000+ words long)
- Images which helps the readers visualize the words.
- Articles including internal links and minimizing external links.
Now let’s talk about why each point is important and how to meet up with these requirements.
a. Research for traffic attracting keywords.
In order to find the right keywords to get your website initially ranking and eventually gaining authority on various search engines, you will need to find keywords which are being searched for.
I am able to find the right keywords using the Jaaxy keyword research tool.
b.Google Loves Lengthy Content
By simply doing a word count of the top google search results, this can be confirmed. Let’s carry out the experiment with the first five posts recommended by Google using the keyphrase “how to write blog content”.
According to Yoast SEO, my favorite SEO content creation, WordPress plugin, the minimum word count of your article should be 300+ but articles with 1000+ are favored.
The training on the wealthy affiliate (a top ranking affiliate training program) on content creation recommends 1000+ for all keyword rich content.
I think it is important to note that some websites might be favored despite their low word count because;
- They have gained authority and trust on Google due to their long history of continuous provision of high-quality content.
- They have many internal links.
- High social media shares
- High reader interaction.
It is important to note that most of these reasons were not achieved overnight.
c.Use Internal Links
This is really simple, it all begins with you believing in yourself. If you are not willing to recommend your past articles to readers, Google doesn’t see you as worthy to be recommended too.
Internal links also keep readers on your website, hence reducing your bounce rate(the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page).
In my first month of blogging and lack of internal links on my blog post, I had a bounce rate of more than 90%.
After 2+ months of blogging and adding internal links to my posts, my bounce rate has reduced
As you can see from a screenshot of my present google analytics, readers session duration on my website has also increased.
This tells Google that readers love your website, meaning you have quality and useful content, increasing their trust in your site and the chance of your website topping the search engine result page (SERP).
d.Minimize External Links.
The more links to other sites you have on your blog post, the greater your bounce rate. Which as I explained above is a negative indicator to google.
Do not add affiliate links to all of your blog posts. You could recommend to your readers some of your past posts which have affiliate links.
Hence reducing external links and increasing internal links.
e.Continuously Spread The Word.
Above is a screenshot of the second listed article on the first page from our google search on “how to write”. We can notice the number of shares across four different highly popular social media platforms which sums up to 1940 shares.
Though according to Google, your rank on their search result page does not depend on your social shares.
We all know that your rank depends on the number of visitors you have and interaction with your content. We can get this by sharing our content on social media.
Bing which comes second to Google with 24% of US searches, says the number of social shares and likes is a search engine rank criteria.
In order to increase the chances of your posts going viral on social media, it is important to;
- Optimize your social media profiles.
- Post regularly.
- Improve your social updates ( post with captivating titles and images )
- improve website content ( create engaging content with Pinterest graphics, add search buttons to the top of your post). Make it easy for readers to share.
- Engage with your followers.

f. Add Images In The Right Way
Search engines also use the alternate text for pictures used on your posts in order to add it to the results page.
So it is important to put your keyphrase as the alternate text for your images.
Watch this video guide on how to find and rightly upload pictures to your website.
As discussed above, when your readers interact with your content tells google about the quality and usefulness of your content. Hence Google will recommend your content to more people.
Ask your readers to comment by;
- Asking questions.
- Seeking their opinions or recommendations.
