Readers Are Leaders

lessons learned from books

I am sure you have come across videos or articles in which the creator talks about books recommended by successful people.

Say what you want about Tai Lopez but the guy is a super successful entrepreneur and in his TED talk, he talks about owing his success to reading a book a day.

Even getting to know about the biography of many successful people, they all talk about the books they read which led to a shift in their mindset and their subsequent success.

Oprah Winfrey talks about being inspired by the words in color purple so much so that she bought several copies for her coworkers.

Many successful people all talk about the positive impact reading numerous books had on their lives and can have on yours too.

I can wholeheartedly attest to that.

So in order to inspire you to prioritize reading, I will like to share with you some of the 20 lessons I learned from books.

20 Lesson Learned From Books.

20 lessons learned from books

1. Wake up even when you don’t feel like

This was one of the lessons which inspired me to begin my entrepreneurial journey, even when I felt like the view ahead was too blur.

I was at a point in my life when I found it hard to feel gratitude.

I was at a level at which I hated but was less motivated to do anything about it.

The only way I was beginning to make a change for the better was acting even when that was the last thing I wanted to do.

This Lesson inspired by Mel-Robbins, 5- second rule.

2. Your today abilities don’t determine your tomorrow capabilities

I was at a point in my life when what I spent 4 years of my life, studying in college was far from the career I wanted to spend my life doing.

A point when most of the skills I had spent time learning was not going to help me create the life I wanted.

So my abilities to achieve my goals were zero at that point and if I let that keep me down, I might never have gotten to where I am today.

What I had to do was make the effort to get the capabilities I needed for tomorrow.

That began my online studies journey.

My belief in this lesson has been made stronger after reading mindset, the new psychology for success.

3. Challenges are great.

I remember first seeing challenges as a sign from the universe that this was not the road for me.

Then my mindset was changed after getting to know about the success stories of most of the people I looked up to.

At 11 years old her dad gave her to a man as his wife for a cow. She had no high school diploma by then but  she worked hard despite all the challenges to achieve her Ph.D., collaborate with Oprah Winfrey to build a school in her village and write a book – Click To Read about Her

At age 11 she was affected by two rare diseases which left her in a vegetative state. For years, she could do nothing but use her mind, she was paralyzed. But with the help of her caretakers, and her determination, she rose up to win medals at the Paralympics, work as a correspondent for ESPN and come fifth on dancing with the stars – Click To Read More About Her

Challenges can’t be the reason why you quite.

Because no success story lacks numerous challenges on the road.

No goals were ever achieved without roadblocks.

4. You have all you need to succeed.

I spent lots of time saying, I would have been famous like Justin Bieber if I was born in Canada and had a voice like him.

But come to think about it there are so many young boys in Canada who have amazing voices but they are not as famous as Bieber.

I also said I would have been rich like Mark Zuckerburgs if I had the opportunity to go to Hazard and meet the twins who gave him his startup idea.

I would have been as famous as Beyonce if I was born in America and my dad could afford to quit his job to focus on my career.

The truth is we can spend our lives looking for excuses why we are not where we want to be.

And if I am being honest, that sometimes made me feel good about where I was.

I felt life was unfair and I was not lucky enough to be given the cards which made others rich and famous.

But the truth is, we are all given the opportunity to live our best lives.

We all have different outcomes which will make us happy, so we all need different tools to get there.

If we were given the same tools as Mark Zuckerburg to get to where we want to go, we might probably not succeed.

So what we need to do is look around us and see that the cards we have been given is what we need to take us to the next level of success, where we will find what we need for the next level, and so on.

Reading the $100 startup helped me learn this lesson.

5. There is no such thing as overnight success

Most times we are looking for a quick fix.

We keep looking for the fastest way to success.

And when we put in effort for a short while and don’t get quick results, we quit.

This was another lesson that getting to know about the success stories of many entrepreneurs have thought me.

The History of the World’s Greatest Entrepreneurs: The Biography of Success

6. Taking care of your mental and physical health is essential for success

One of the biggest challenges I face on my journey to success is consistency.

This inconsistency is usually because of burnout.

I get burned out because I get all excited, go all in and totally ignore my mental and physical health.

When the consequences of this negligence catches up to me, I am left unable to wake up from bed due to numerous health issues.

I ignored my health and prioritized working hard because I believed that was the only way to get what I wanted.

Until I read Thrive, by Arianna Huffington, one of the co-founders of the awarding winning, news and opinion post website, Huffington Post.

In this book, she tells you how to be successful and at the same time healthy.

She teaches us how to create our own balance.

7.  Being the outsider could be a good thing

I have always felt like the outsider for most of my life.

I have always felt like the weird one.

The socially awkward girl, who doesn’t know how to fit in or hold a conversation.

The girl who most people who like to ignore.

Due to my fear of being judged for being weird, I loved being ignored.

I enjoyed being invisible, I feared standing out.

I actually thought my inability to fit in was a measure of how successful I will be.

Then I read, Outliers and David and Goliath both by Malcolm Gladwell.

In these books, he shares the stories of numerous successful people, who achieved success in the most unlikely ways.

8. It is possible to work smart and less

Most times we find it hard to find time for the other things in our lives we really want to or have to do.

We always find it difficult to make the 24 hours work for us.

Raise your hand up if you have ever wished for more hours in the day?

I know I have, several times.

Reading the 4 hour work week by Tim Ferriss, I was thought methods in which I could manage my business and have time for other things.

To make the 24 hours work.

A method which many successful people use.

A way in which we could live the traveling entrepreneur lifestyle.

9. The subconscious mind plays a key role in our success.

I honestly never knew or cared much about the role the subconscious mind had to play in attaining success.

I knew, work hard, stay consistent, have a strong why and so much more.

I knew in order to do all these things necessary for success, I needed to be motivated.

What I didn’t know was how the subconscious mind could help me stay motivated and attract the things I need in my life for success.

Reading The power of the subconscious mind schooled me on this.

I was first made to know about the power of the subconscious mind.

Then how to make use of this power.

10. We can only succeed when we act

Getting to know about the lives of many successful entrepreneurs, I got to see a glimpse of the amount of hard work needed to get to their level of success.

I was also reminded by these books that we need to take steps and the right way to take these steps.

Reading books like think and grow rich, Girl wash your face and the 5-second rule, I am greatly reminded about the need for action.

Action even when you don’t feel like.

Action even when failure might be an option.

Action even when the road ahead is invisible.

We still need to act with the faith that everything is rigged in our favor, cause it is.

11. Success begins from our mindset

In order to achieve success, we need to develop a mindset for success.

We get the mindset then success, not the other way round.

From getting to know about many success stories, we get to see that all successful people have an outstanding mindset which gets them to success.

A mindset which keeps them going despite the numerous challenges and naysayers.

A mindset which makes them believe they can achieve the impossible.

12. We all need daily doses of motivation

I am sure it is no secret that many successful people have a morning routine.

This routine usually includes some type of motivation to boost them up for the day.

Many successful people read daily and this inspires their next steps.

Implementing this regular motivation tactic in my life has been very impactful

13. Success is outside your comfort zone

This is another lesson gotten from success stories.

Most successful people find success when they take the step to do things which scared them.

Most successful people took the risk even before they weren’t 100% certain of success.

Most successful people even still took risk after huge failures.

This lesson inspires me to take the route of going all in , even when the outcome is uncertain.

I remember being so determined to live on my own far from home for the first time in my life.

Many people were against this decision but I knew it was something I needed to do to grow.

I will admit the beginning was rocky.

I had a panic attack for the first time in my life.

But right now I strongly believe it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

14. You can do Anything you set your mind to

Yes, you heard that right , anything.

And many successful people have proven that.

You can know about them from books like the $100 startup, Locked In , and so much more.

In these books, you get to know about the stories of many people who succeeded to achieved the impossible despite all the roadblocks.

15. Don’t make decisions out of fear

From books, I learned that success comes from going forward despite the fear and uncertainty.

Fear will tell you to stay in your comfort zone.

Fear will tell you to backdown when the challenges begin.

Fear will be there limiting your belief in what is possible.

So if we make decisions which are in agreement with our fears, success might forever remain just a dream.

16. Always begin with your why

Simon Sinek’s book, start with your why tells us about the importance of starting with our why.

He gives us examples of successful companies which started with a strong why.

That why inspired customer loyalty behind a common cause which made their brand timeless.

He also talks about companies who failed to do the same and the challenges and eventual shutdown they experienced.

He inspires and tells us how to start with our why.

17. We can always spend less than we currently do

We can all become a millionaire and retire young.

We can all live a debt free life, no matter your income.

You can learn how by reading David Bach, The automatic Millionaire

18. Focus on excellence and success will follow You.

Actually, this was a statement I got from the bollywood movie, 3 idiots.

But then getting to know more about the reason why very few people attain succeed from books.

I realized this was because many of us chase success and ignore excellence.

Succesful people work hard to improve their skills, to be the best at what they do.

As a result of their exceptional skills, success then comes.

We can know more about this in the book, So good they can’t ignore you, why skill trumps passion in the quest for work you love.

19. Knowledge is power

I have heard many successful people say this .

And I can also attest to this.

The only way , I have succeeded to attain a certain height in my journey was through the knowledge I got from numerous books and online courses.

My online success came from acquiring knowledge from an incredible platform called Wealthy affilaite.

A platform in which we are taught how to dominate our online niche.

How to get our websites to ranking high on google.

20. It is easier to believe it is possible , when someone you can relate to, achieved it.

Reading numerous stories of people who I can relate to achieving success really inspired me to work for thesame.

One book which really inspired me was Born a crime by Trevor Noah, the host of the daily show.

He was brought up in an African community just like me

I could also relate to Girl Wash your face by Rachel Hollis.

The is a strong reason why since its release in February 2018, this book has maintained a spot in the top 10 best-selling books in the country for seven months, held the top spot for 12 of those weeks and has sold more than 880,000 total copies in the United States.

It was the second-most popular book of 2018 on Amazon.com.

In this book, she talks about the challenges she faced as a growing woman.

She talks about stories which I am sure all girls can relate to.

Stories which we might feel ashamed of because we think it makes us less than but she tells us she has been there and still succeeded to build one of the most successful blogs online and motivate others to do same.

I absolutely agree, that readers are leaders. In books, we have the opportunity to live different life paths, and learn to take better decisions after travelling the path of the author.

You’ve listed good points as to why it’s important we maintain the reading culture. Sadly, this culture is getting list among youths today. I would like to share this post with my world, so everyone I know would understand the benefits of reading.

    • Etah

      It was a pleasure sharing.
I agree with you youths read less and less as the days go by.
I think many youths find it hard to focus on reading when there are so many other things pulling our attention but one thing I strongly believe can help make a difference is intergrating some of these life lessons to movies or tv shows, something I see happening more and more lately which I think is incredible.

I agree that there are many life lessons that I can get from books. Literature, self development, novel, comic books, all of these books gave me some important life lessons. I agree with these two lessons: that success doesn’t come overnight and it also begin with your subconscious. Do you have one or two most memorable life lessons that you got from books? Thanks

One of the best books that I ever read that totally changed my way of thinking was Rich Dad Poor Dad. It is a book that whenever I give it to anyone that thinking drastically changes to live a life not controlled by your employee. Another great book I also read was Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hills. A very powerful and inspiring book that tells you that you can achieve anything on this planet if you follow the right principles. One of my favorite quotes is from the tv show spartacus and it is “It is a thing of beauty what a man can accomplish if mind is set to purpose”.
